The Non-UPF Program

A nonprofit dedicated to helping consumers reduce the intake of ultra-processed foods and replace them with healthier foods.

Our Mission

We aim to improve public health, lower the risk of diet-related chronic diseases, and foster a nutritious food environment for future generations by reducing the intake of ultra-processed foods (UPF) through our certification, education, and a platform for researcher collaboration.

The Non-UPF Certification

We take the guesswork out of your food choices by providing an easy-to-recognize Non-UPF Certification label that helps:

  1. Easily find & identify non-ultra-processed foods

  2. Create consumer demand for more non-ultra-processed foods

  3. Support a healthier lifestyle to lower the health risks associated with ultra-processed foods

Our Program’s Goals

We aim to raise awareness, educate, and empower consumers to make informed choices that reduce ultra-processed food consumption and promote whole and less processed foods as the easy, everyday option for better living. We provide health care practitioners (HCPs) and researchers with evidence-based tools on ultra-processed foods (UPF) to foster a trustworthy food supply that reduces chronic disease and harmful dieting.

  • Our trademarked Non-UPF Certification is displayed on food products, making it easy for consumers to quickly identify Non-UPFs, simplifying the shopping experience.

  • We partner with organizations and engage directly with consumers and healthcare practitioners to raise awareness about the importance of reducing UPF and increasing the consumption of less processed foods.

  • We provide a platform for researchers and health care practitioners (HCPs) to collaborate and advance our research on UPF (Platform coming in Fall 2025).

Why We Started The Non-UPF Program

  • Transparency: Empowering consumers with knowledge about what's in their food

  • Simplicity: Making it easy to recognize and reduce ultra-processed food consumption

  • Longevity: Small choices can make a big difference in reducing chronic disease risks

  • For Our Children: Teaching kids the value of choosing non-ultra-processed foods more often

  • Balance: Promoting a return to real, wholesome foods

“We envision a world where greater transparency in the food system – through the labeling of non-ultra-processed foods (UPF) – drives consumers and companies to make healthier food and product development choices.”
